Dept of Mechanical Engineering
Department of Mechanical Engineering started in the year 1979 has been accredited by the NBA (National Board of Accreditation) twice. In line with the vision of the department, the department has an UG program with 120 intake in Mechanical Engineering with a set of Robust core courses accompanied by Industrially relevant, current electives like Robotics, Aircraft Structure Design, CFD etc. In the year 2003 an unique PG program Engineering Analysis Design was been started which has been well accepted by the industry and institutes of higher learning. Keeping this in mind another PG program in Industrial Automation & Robotics has been started in the year 2013.
The autonomous status and the TEQIP 1.2 has enabled to setup state of art facility to impart specialized training in the areas of Pneumatics, Hydraulics, Sensorics, Mechatronics & Robotics through an MOU with Bosch Rexroth (India) Ltd., which comes under the Mechanical Engineering Department. The department has an established research center under VTU, Belgaum, wherein research in the areas of Robotics, Advanced Machining, Bio fuel and Sustainable Technologies is being carried out. The department has experienced faculty, versatile support staff and state-of-art labs. It has been contributing richly to the growth and development of the institution and its stake holders. The department has 33 Teaching Staff & 39 Non-Teaching staff.
The students of the department have participated in large numbers and won accolades in co-curricular, cultural and sports events. They have executed over 294 projects of which many are novel and innovative projects in their pre-final and final years. The students have undergone training in ready engineer program conducted TATA Technologies and have been trained in our Bosch Rexroth Center of Excellence in Hydraulics & Pneumatics, Sensorics and PLCs. Building of Robots for the robotic competition held at San Mateo, California, USA was completely fabricated by our department staff. The department is taking initiative in establishing a research and development center for collaborative and digital manufacturing to cater to local industry of North Karnataka. Our students have participated thrice in the Spirit Global Aircraft Design contest held at Wichita, USA and have won 1st & 2nd places, Guided and accompanied by Prof.K.C.Shindhe.The department has facilitated at SDMCET two workshops conducted by ISTE-MHRD in Basic Thermodynamics with IIT, Bombay and Fluid Mechanics with IIT, Kharagpur attended by faculty from outside colleges and faculty in-house.
