The Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering of SDM College of Engineering and Technology, Dharwad was established in the year 1979 with an initial intake of 30 seats which was further enhanced to 60. The course has been approved by AICTE , accredited by NBA twice, with B grade, recognized as one of the research centers of VTU for M.Sc. (Engineering) & Ph.D. degree and has been awarded an Autonomous status since 2007.
Right from its inception, the Department is working with the motto “Professional Competence with Positive Attitude”. The Department has eighteen faculty with five doctorates and two faculty on deputation for PhD at NITK,Suratkal and the rest with Post Graduate qualifications.The average experience of the department faculty is 21 years. As the Department is rich with senior faculty, many are shouldering college level administration responsibilities. The Department has excellent staff-student ratio of 1:15. It has enough space to accommodate independent laboratories needed for the curriculum. The academic ambience and student teacher relationship is very good.
An M.Tech. Program in Power Systems Engineering has been started from the academic year 2012-13. This program is affiliated to the Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum, and is a unique program offered in Northern Karnataka region. This two-year post graduate degree level course, imparts education in Power Transmission systems, Power System Analysis and Operation, Power System Transients and Protection, Power System Dynamics and Control, and High Voltage DC Transmission. Potential aspirants both from academic institutions and industry can utilize this unique opportunity. The program goal is to provide an education that is directly applicable to a career in industry and is suitable for fresh graduates, as well as experienced professionals who want to receive the necessary retraining to change careers
